Sun Rises in the East; River North Gets Another Residential Tower

It must be a day ending in “Y” because we have news about a residential tower in River North.  640 North Wells has been approved by the Chicago Plan Commission, bringing the number of new residential skyscrapers greenlit for River North this year to 7,854.

640 North Wells will replace hyper-sarcastic mock diner Ed Debevic’s, a perennial favorite of tourists looking to get roughed up in the big city in a Disney-safe atmosphere, and the bane of anyone who accidentally went there actually looking for a hamburger because they were hungry.

The completed project will be 22 stories tall, consisting of 253 residences above 117 parking spaces and ground floor retail.  The developer is JDL Development, and the architecture firm is Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture. The project also includes a one-story retail building next to the tower.
